Our Team Patrons

Details soon to be announced of patrons for 2012.  Many thanks to all the Irish Sports and Entertainment personalities who have expressed their desire to become Patron for Great Garda Run 2012.

Eamonn Coghlan (Chicago Patron 2009)

Eamonn Coghlan is a 3-time Olympian and world championship winning athlete.  He set the world record for the indoor mile run with a time of 3.52.6 in San Diego in 1979. He lowered this to 3:50.6 in 1981 and then bettered it to 3:49.78 in 1983 at New Jersey's Meadowlands indoor arena. His record stood until 1997 when it was broken by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in a time of 3:48.45. It is still the second fastest indoor mile of all time and is still, 26 years on, a European Record.

He won the 5000 metres at the 1983 World Championships (& remains Irelands only ever male World Champion gold medallist) to follow two fourth places in the Olympics (in the 1500 metres in 1976 and the 5000 metres in 1980).  Possibly Eamonn's proudest moment was being the first person over 40 to do a sub four minute mile in a record time which still stands today. In total, Eamonn has run 83 sub 4 minute miles, indoor and out.

He currently coaches some of Ireland's up and coming junior international athletes who have won numerous Irish national titles and are aspiring to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.
